It has emerged that Gül Özgür, a 62-year-old Reforestation and the Protection of Natural Habitats Foundation (TEMA) volunteer who was detained during an operation carried out ahead of the NATO Summit held in Ankara on 7–8 July and has been in custody since 25 June, has broken her leg in prison.

Özgür told her relatives that she had broken her foot a week ago when her ankle twisted whilst walking in the prison exercise yard; she was transferred to Sincan State Hospital, where her foot was put in a plaster cast.

Appearing in a wheelchair for today’s closed-door visit, Özgür told her relatives that she was struggling to meet her daily needs due to the fracture in her leg. Noting that she had difficulty showering, Özgür stated that she was able to do so with the help of other detained volunteers.

The 10 TEMA volunteers arrested as part of the operation have now completed their 28th day in prison. A detention review hearing is scheduled for Thursday, 23 July.

Among the detainees are 71-year-old Selahattin Başıbüyük, 65-year-old Birgül Öztekin, 64-year-old Nevzat Özer (TEMA’s Ankara Provincial Representative) and Gülbanu Yürür, 62-year-old Gül Özgür, 60-year-old Zekai Atabay, 54-year-old Fatma Didem Genç, 51-year-old Ümit Özdemir and Gamzeli Sorgun Seren, and 34-year-old Bircan Temiz.

Among the 14 volunteers under house arrest, the oldest is 79-year-old Tuğba Kiper. The volunteers placed under house arrest include 74-year-old Necla Konuşmaz, 72-year-old Semra Aygün, 68-year-old Nurten Berk, Fikriye Murt and Sabriye Başıbüyük, 66-year-old Ömer Cengiz, 64-year-old Ayten Özdemir, 63-year-old Serpil Çerkez, 59-year-old Meral Pişmiş, 57-year-old Fatma Kutbay, 54-year-old Ruziye Yüksel, 50-year-old Gülüşen Tunçay and 21-year-old Polat Şakoğlu.
