The economic crisis in the country is reaching proportions that can no longer be concealed. Whilst virtually every public opinion poll highlights the financial struggles faced by citizens, a field survey presented to CHP Leader Özgür Özel also lays bare this dramatic picture.
The field survey, which was also discussed during a meeting between Özel and his ‘A Team’ in the Grand National Assembly, shows that even AKP and MHP voters are pessimistic about the Turkish economy.
AKP-MHP VOTERS
It is striking that optimism regarding the Turkish economy remains limited even within the regime’s voter base. Only 51 per cent of AKP voters believe the economy is improving. Meanwhile, 32.2 per cent of the AKP’s voter base state that the economy is deteriorating. A similar picture emerges among MHP voters. According to the survey presented to Özel, the proportion of MHP voters who say “the economy is improving” stands at 38.6 per cent. 44.7 per cent of MHP voters state that the economy is deteriorating. The combined proportion of MHP and AKP voters who believe the economy’s current state will remain stable is reported as 32.7 per cent.
Nearly all CHP voters, however, express the view that “the economy is getting worse”. The proportion of CHP voters stating that the economy is getting worse is recorded at 97.8 per cent. All 100 per cent of respondents identifying as DEM Party voters also report that the economy is getting worse. Among İYİ Party voters, the proportion of those saying “the economy is getting worse” is reflected in the survey as 86.5 per cent.
LOW-INCOME GROUPS ARE DESPAIRING
According to the research, as income levels fall, pessimism regarding the economic outlook deepens. The proportion of those who believe the Turkish economy is deteriorating reaches 84 per cent in the low-income group, whilst it falls to 69 per cent in the lower-middle income group and to 60 per cent in the upper-middle and high-income groups.
