Ahead of the NATO summit to be held in Ankara on 7–8 July, detentions and crackdowns are continuing across the country.

In operations carried out in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Kocaeli, Çanakkale, Antalya, Denizli and Bursa, lawyers, members of the Revolutionary Youth Association and staff and readers of the Revolutionary Movement Magazine, law students, 11 members of the Halkevi (People’s House) – including Gülcan Şahin, Chair of the Antalya Halkevi, and the entire branch management – and executives of the Turkish Workers’ Party (TİP) Antalya Provincial Organisation, a Kocaeli executive of the Labour Party, and members of Labour Youth were detained after their homes were raided and their doors broken down.

Three members of the SOL Party were also detained in Denizli. Among those detained were Yiğit Pertev, a member of the Executive Board of the Private Sector Teachers’ Union; Diğde Simay Pertev, the Antalya Provincial Spokesperson; and Mehmet Akif Karaca, the Antalya Provincial Representative.

STATEMENT FROM THE ÇHD

The Progressive Lawyers Association (ÇHD) announced that its Istanbul Branch Chair, Lawyer Ezgi Önalan, and branch member Lawyer Yunusemre Işık were detained during a police operation carried out in the early hours of the morning.

In a post on the association’s social media account, it was stated that Önalan was detained following a raid on her home.

The statement indicated that information had been received that a large number of clients of lawyers had also been detained in simultaneous operations.

The ÇHD’s statement read: “Our Istanbul Branch Chair, Lawyer Ezgi Önalan, was detained following a police operation carried out at her home in the early hours of the morning. We have learnt that a large number of her clients were also detained simultaneously.”

The association concluded its post with the words: “Put an end to political operations that promise NATO a thornless rose garden.”

ACADEMICS ALSO DETAINED

Academic and writer Sibel Özbudun and Temel Demirer are among those detained.

Academic and writer Associate Professor Dr Sibel Özbudun announced on her social media account that she had been detained alongside academic and writer Temel Demirer. In her post, Özbudun said: “We are being detained. Being transferred to Muğla. Temel Demirer – Sibel Özbudun.”

T24 EDITOR BUSE SÖĞÜTLÜ AND ODATV EDITOR CEREN ERDOĞDU ALSO IN CUSTODY

Among those taken into custody are T24 foreign news editor Buse Söğütlü and Odatv editor Ceren Erdoğdu.

Söğütlü’s lawyer, Erman Öztürk, said that a 24-hour restriction on visits had been imposed and that they did not yet know the grounds for the detention. According to a report by Odatv, police officers took Ceren Erdoğdu from her home early this morning.

LAW STUDENTS DETAINED IN ANKARA

Meanwhile, ahead of the NATO Summit, law students Boran Işıldak and Burhan Can were detained yesterday in the Tuzluçayır neighbourhood of Ankara.

In a statement issued by the ÇHD, it was noted that the students had been detained due to their anti-NATO activities, stating: “Our colleagues and committee members, Boran Işıldak and Burhan Can, were detained in Tuzluçayır, Ankara, under the pretext of NATO’s arrival,” and calling for their release.
